Is Jesus Christ God?
The above question has been a subject of debate for centuries, and is still been debated up until now. Many people believe that Jesus Christ is not God and they always employ their powers to vehemently argue against it. There are equally strong proponents who argues for the deity of Christ, for such people believe that Jesus Christ is God and that he possesses all the divine attributes that sets him apart as God. But is it true that Jesus Christ is God? The answer to this important theological question can only be answered based on what is written in the holy scriptures. Please take your time and carefully read through this article, and by the end of this article your query will be answered
Jesus own claims
Did Jesus ever claim to be God? In the book of John it is written: Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." So the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am." Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple (John 8: 56-59). The question is, why did the unbelieving Jews picked up stones to stone Jesus for blasphemy? This was because they understood what Jesus meant by "I am". They knew from the scriptures that Jesus was claiming to be the same God who appeared to the prophet Moses on mount Moriah in the midst of the burning bush, see (Exodus 3; 1-15).
Jesus in another place also said: "Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me (John 14: 1). Jesus made it clear from this text, that he and the father are both the object of faith. This tells us that Jesus is equal with the father in respect to his divine nature. Jesus also said: So that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him (John 5: 23). Jesus claims equality with the father in the sense that, the same divine honor ascribed to the father, that same divine honor should be attributed to him as well. This is a statement which a mere creature cannot make, save God, therefore Jesus is God.
The early apostles claims
The early apostles also believed and proclaimed from the depth of their heart the deity of Christ. Thomas was one of the disciples who referred to Jesus after his resurrection as, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20: 28). Did Jesus rebuke him for addressing him in such a manner? Certainly not, why? Because that is exactly who he is, our Lord and God. In another place it is also written: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1: 1,14). The Word that was with God is God himself, and that same Word took on flesh and tabernacled among us, in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Apostle Paul wrote: looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus (Titus 2: 13). Paul by the Spirit made it clear without any obscurity whatsoever that the Man Jesus is our great God and Savior. Apostle Peter also wrote: Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1: 1). Peter wrote the same truth as apostle Paul, that Jesus is our God and Savior. The truth about the deity of Christ is in the pages of the epistles of the early apostles
Jesus divine Attributes
Jesus possesses all the qualities and attributes that makes him God. In the book of Hebrews it is written: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13: 8). This text of scripture reveals the truth of the immutability of Christ. Though we are born again, nonetheless we are still mutable in our nature. Only God is immutable and Jesus is described by the Spirit as immutable, which means that Jesus is God. After the resurrection of Christ from the dead, he said this to his disciples: Teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28: 20).
He commanded his disciples to go around preaching the gospel, and promised to be with them always. This text speaks of Christ omnipresence. Only God is ubiquitous and Jesus claims to be ubiquitous, therefore Jesus is God. It is written in the book of Mark: And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?"(Mark 2: 5-7). From the context of the story, Jesus pardoned the sins of the paralytic and his sins were forgiven. We know that such divine prerogative is exclusively reserved for God alone, but Jesus exercised such divine right. Jesus demonstrated his omnipotence by forgiving the sins of the paralytic. This tells us that Jesus is all powerful and this affirms the truth of the deity of Christ.
Jesus receives worship
But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful (Matthew 28:16-17). The disciples paid divine homage to their Lord and Savior which is also a proof of his deity. In the book of Hebrews it is written: And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, "And let all the angels of God worship Him."(Hebrews 1:6). The first person of the trinity commands the angelic hosts to worship Jesus Christ. If Jesus Christ is not God and equal with the father, then why will the father command the angelic hosts to worship him? Also, it is important to know that there is no way the holy angels would worship a created being. In the book of Revelation, we see divine obeisance and worship ascribed to the Lamb of God, who is none other than the Man Jesus Christ, see (Revelation 5: 11- 14). The fact that Jesus receives worship is an undeniable proof of his deity. To study more on this, you can read my article on, "Is Jesus worthy of worship? I believe there is much you can learn from that article.
Defend the truth of the deity of Christ
It is our duty as Christian's to contend for the truth respecting the deity of Christ. Is Jesus Christ God? Sure he is and there are numerous biblical passages which attest to this great biblical truth. If Jesus Christ is not God, then we are of all men the most miserable. But of a truth, Jesus Christ is the very God of very God, and we must be willing to defend this truth to the best of our ability. For this cause, I beseech thee by the mercies of God to carefully study this article over and over until you are well rooted and grounded in this truth. Many of our brethren in the faith who are with the Lord in heaven, have contended for this truth, and God is calling on you and I to do likewise.
A thought to ponder 🤔
